Preparing Pets for Fall
Goodbye, Summer. Hello, Fall! With August over already, it’s time to start preparing ourselves and our dogs for the autumn months!
It is difficult to believe that summer is over! While it feels like we just broke out the flip flops and swimsuits, it is time to put those away and pull out the jackets. While you are preparing yourself and your home for the Fall months, how should you be preparing your pet?
For dogs and other furry critters, Fall is the time to stop brushing their fur—at least as often! By this time, most of the shedding should be done, and the winter coat should start growing in. For animals that don’t have a thick coat of fur, you may want to consider getting a warm sweater or two to help keep them warm. Have you ever seen a Chihuahua with a vest or sweater? It’s not just a fashion statement; it actually does protect them from the cold! If you think your pet could use a little help, make sure that the clothing isn’t too tight. A good rule of thumb is that you should be able to fit two fingers between the clothing item and your animal’s body.
In addition, it is a good idea to keep your yard clean and free of leaves. While the leaves may have some pretty colors, it could be dangerous to some pets. For instance, the leaves could be hiding large branches or uneven ground. Landing on either of those could injure your pooch. Also, once the foliage is raked into big piles, it is good to get it moved off the yard and onto the curb. This is because snakes are still roaming around, and would like to curl up in one of those piles. While the reptile may enjoy this, your pet won’t if it gets bitten.
Stay tuned on how to keep your pet reptile or amphibian cozy this Fall and Winter!
